MKT Raw 2007

We recently completed a live recording and promotional video for Milton Keynes Theatre who host the MKT Raw event for young dancers every year.

Shooting was a two stage process involving two days filming interviews and background footage of the three groups of dancers working with their respective choreographers (Nikki O'Hara, Helen Parlor and Andy Instone), taking photographs and recording interviews with the dance makers.The second part involved shooting the live performance, the following week, at Milton Keynes Theatre.

The trick, during editing, was to make the three different shows look like one performance for the finished DVD. Each participant in the project receives a copy of the finished disc, which includes the full show, background footage and a photo slideshow.

You may be asking; why not shoot one show with three cameras? It's all about cost, shooting with one camera and one operator is significantly less expensive than three operators and one show.

Fortunately the dancers were so good you would never know that the finished cut was stitched together from three shows.

All Play Dance

Sometimes shooting for a company means filming in a theatre, sometimes it means filming in a studio and then there are times it involves standing in a farmers field early in the morning.

Article19 was tasked with creating a full range of promotional materials for the brand new company All Play. To emphasise the portability of their work the company of two dancers wanted excerpts from their piece 'It's Rude To Point" shot in various locations around Leamington Spa, which included the aforementioned field.

Shooting also took place in various streets, buildings and an unsuccessful attempt to film in a shopping centre without permission (sometimes guerrilla tactics pay off mind you).

When all the filming and photography was complete two edits were assembled. One montage video showing location and theatre footage and an editing theatrical performance excerpt, both for the company's website (also built by Article19).

The video material was also assembled onto a promotional DVD to be sent out to producers.
